$10 cat spay and neuters available to local residents

North County is experiencing an explosion in the feline population and SLO county shelter warns it is filling to capacity

spay-neuter catsThe shelter at the San Luis Obispo County Department of Animal Services is getting very full. The danger with the county shelter filling to capacity is that the pets that have been in the shelter the longest could be euthanized in order to make room for the new pets entering the shelter.

This needless killing of adoptable pets can be avoided if more people spayed or neutered their pets. Animal services intake records indicated that the cities of Atascadero and Paso Robles are experiencing an explosion in the feline population that is out of proportion to the rest of the County. While Atascadero and Paso Robles represent only 21.5-percent of the county’s human population, they are responsible for 69-percent of County Animal Services’ intake of stray cats.

Once aware of these statistics, Wood’s Humane Society applied and received grant funds from Petsmart Charities and the ASPCA to begin offering $10 Cat Spays and Neuters through the Spay It Forward – Neuter the Next Program. This program is available to any individual who owns an unaltered cats and can show proof of residence in Atascadero or Paso Robles. For more information please contact Woods Humane Society at www.woodshumanesociety.org or (805) 543-9316 ext.12.
