1954: Marilyn Monroe left stocking in Paso Robles
Maid finds Marilyn Monroe’s stocking in the trash at Paso Robles motel
Stocking on display in New York at Ripley’s Believe It or Not!
After they tied the knot in 1954, Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio and the Blonde Bombshell drove to the Clifton Motel in Paso Robles paying $6.50 for a room. Legend has it, the two didn’t leave the room for 15 hours, and when they finally did a maid found a gently used stocking in the wastebasket, according to a story in the New York Daily News.
Hotel owner Ernest Sharp retrieved the hosiery and sold it for a small fortune. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Vice President of Exhibits Edward Meyer tracked down the curiosity and put it on display.
Ripley’s is exhibiting a roster of bizarre baseball memorabilia at its New York City Times Square location. Items include a lock of Ted Williams’ hair and the stocking Marilyn Monroe purportedly wore for Joe DiMaggio on their wedding night in 1954, the so-called Honeymoon Stocking.
The strange lineup finds a home field at the W. 42nd St. Odditorium’s Baseball Room, which celebrated its opening day this month, with $1.2 million worth of baseball history from around the country, Astroturf underfoot and the smell of buttered popcorn wafting in the air.
