On May 16, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Deputies served a search warrant at the apartment of 26-year-old Billy Lee Remick, Jr. in the 5000 block Traffic Way in Atascadero. Members of the Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit were conducting a follow-up investigation after Remick had attempted to illegally ship 559 grams of marijuana to a location in New York state a week earlier.

During a search of his apartment, a Sheriff’s K9 detected what later was determined to be almost 62 grams of cocaine that was packaged inside an oatmeal can that was boxed up for shipping.

Remick was not home at the time, but two of his brothers were there babysitting Remick’s seven month old son. The child was in a crib, next to a nightstand. On top of the nightstand were several loose pills including prescription, over-the-counter and illegal narcotics in pill form that were within easy reach of the child. A subsequent urine sample of the child tested positive for cocaine. The baby was turned over to Child Welfare Services.

Remick was arrested later the same day at his work place in Atascadero. A sheriff’s spokesman declined to say where he worked. Remick was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of possessing a controlled substance for sale and willful cruelty to a child.
