Boys earn fastest team time in Paso Robles High School history

–Following a successful showing from the Paso Robles High School cross country teams at the CIF Southern Section Cross Country Finals at Mt. San Antonio College, seven boys and two girls from the Bearcat squad advanced on and practiced throughout the week of Thanksgiving break in order to represent Paso Robles with pride at the CIF State Cross Country Championships.

The CIF State Finals took place at Woodward Park in Clovis on Saturday, Nov. 28. The Bearcat runners competed against runners from 24 of the top-ranked schools in California, seven of which were from the Southern Section.

Representing PRHS and the Southern Section as individual runners, Ashley Davis and Annie Meeder competed in the girls’ Division 3 race. Davis finished 13th overall with a time of 18:08, while Meeder came in 23rd at 18:26. Both runners claimed the fastest performances on the Clovis course in Bearcat history.

“It was a very sweet finish for both girls,” said PRHS Cross Country Coach Jon-Paul Ewing. “Ashley had almost a 50 second improvement on the course, and Annie shaved 20 seconds off of her personal best – enormous improvements on a chilly course.”

The PRHS boys’ team had what Coach Ewing deemed “the best performance ever for our school” with the fastest team time and a third place finish – the best in Bearcat history (the boys’ team in 2014 finished seventh; in 2001 and 2012, 10th). Juniors Luis Armendariz and Trad Berti finished 14th and 15th with times of 15:34 and 15:37 respectively. They were followed by seniors Gannon Chamberlain (27th at 15:53), Josh Potter (39th at 16:03), and Taylor Bedrosian (100th at 16:44). Freshman runner Pablo Cortes was close behind at 17:02, with junior Damian Navarro nipping his heels at 17:04.

“Through ups and downs of the season, illnesses and injuries, the boys came through and got on that medal podium for the first time in school history,” said Coach Ewing. “It was an incredible season and we will remember this state meet performance for years to come. All of our athletes can hold their heads high, knowing they paid the price all season and are the best PRHS has ever had.”

Coach Ewing, his fellow coaches, and the Bearcat runners send a special “thank you” to all of the families and friends that made the drive to Clovis to cheer them on during the State Meet, including Paso Robles School District Superintendent Chris Williams, District Athletic Director Richard Clayton, and School Board President Field Gibson – and all of those that showed support throughout the season.
