Camp Roberts conducts air assault training exercise

Air operations camp roberts
– California Army National Guard soldiers in the 40th Combat Aviation Brigade, headquartered in Fresno, are currently participating in an air assault exercise at Camp Roberts in preparation for their upcoming deployment to Kuwait.

The 1st Battalion, 140th Aviation Regiment, of the 40th Combat Aviation Brigade, a Los Alamitos-based unit, are transporting several platoons of soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment in UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters to landing zones. This exercise will give the brigade’s flight crews, ground support and command elements valuable practice for stability support operations overseas.

After air assault insertion by brigade helicopters, the 1-184th soldiers will conduct foot patrols to Camp Roberts’ Combined Arms Collective Training Center to practice various squad and platoon-level combat exercises in urban terrain.

Sargent Ian Kummer said that the exercise is the final part of two days of rehearsals. The soldiers will also be performing a similar operation tonight in the dark, with night vision gear, to test the soldiers’ preparedness for night operations.

The brigade is scheduled to travel to Fort Hood, Tx., later this year to conduct their final phase of mobilization training and preparation before deploying to the Middle East.
