Thousands of locals and visitors gathered Wednesday near the Cayucos Pier for the annual Carlin Soule’ Memorial Polar Bear Dip, celebrated every New Year’s Day.

The festivities began at 9:30 a.m., with the chilly ocean swim set for noon, according to the Cayucos Chamber of Commerce.

“The polar dip is a great event to kick of the new year,” says Richard Shannon, owner of On The Beach Bed and Breakfast in Cayucos.  The crew at his Cayucos hotel located near the pier make it an annual tradition. “Come by and say hi. We will be dressed up as the Flintstones and will be making the dip again this year.”

The current water temperature of 56 degrees at Cayucos Pier is quite cool, according to Surf-Forecast.com. If the sun shines as forecasted, it should feel warm enough to jump in the water in a good spring wetsuit. Effective windchill factor will make the air and water feel about the same temperature.

Cayucos is located on Highway 1 just a couple of miles north of Morro Bay. The town started during the days of Spanish land grants, when Cayucos grew up with sailing ships and steamers, rum runners and revenuers. Gamblers and seafarers met in the Old Cayucos Tavern, and adventurers and romantics of all kinds still meet there today.
