–California Highway Patrol has released the identity of those involved in the fatal collision that occurred Friday evening in Paso Robles, as well as additional details regarding the crash.

On Friday, at approximately 8:43 p.m., a Templeton CHP Officer was on routine patrol on US 101 southbound south of San Marcos Road. As he approached Wellsona Road, the officer bserved a vehicle in the median of US 101 north of Wellsona Road and dust in the air to the east of US 101 near the Vines RV Resort. When he arrived on scene, he determined a two-vehicle collision had just occurred in the intersection. He observed that there were two male adults in the median in a Honda Accord, who had sustained minor to major injuries.

61-year-old Chualar resident Alejo Alegre related he had been traveling northbound on US 101 in his 2005 Chevy Colbalt at approximately 70 MPH when 50-year-old Visalia resident, Van Hugh Needham, who had been traveling westbound on Wellsona Road in a 2010 Honda Accord, entered the 101 from the east side of the intersection at Wellsona Road, in the general vicinity of the Vines RV Resort.

Upon contact with the occupants in the Cobalt, Officer Farrar observed that the right-front passenger, identified as 55-year-old Visalia resident Sherry Champagne, sustained major injuries and that the driver (Needham) appeared non-responsive. CPR was performed on Needham for an extended period of time prior to the arrival of an ambulance. Champagne related that Needham came to a stop and pulled out into the Northbound lanes of US 101 just prior to the impact. As a result of the collision, Needham sustained major injuries and succumbed to these injuries while at the scene.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation and the involvement of alcohol has not been ruled out as a potential contributing factor.
