Paso High Theatre Co. presents ‘A Christmas Carol’ this month

PRHS A Christmas Carol

Paso High Theatre Co. will put on its fall show, “A Christmas Carol” starting this week.

This is first year company will put on a Christmas play

Paso Robles High School Theatre Company will present “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens and adapted by Romulus Linney Dec. 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 7 and 14 at 2 p.m. at the Paso Robles High School Performing Arts Center, 801 Niblick Road.  Each year, director Marcy Goodnow said, the company does one play in the fall and one musical in the spring.

“I choose a different show every year. I am always trying to teach them something new with each show we do,” Goodnow said. “This is the first time we are doing something with a Christmas-related theme.”

Last year, the company performed “Robin Hood” in the fall and “Hairspray” in the spring. The production of “A Christmas Carol” has 30 cast members and about 30 students working back stage and behind the scenes.

“The actors are all advanced drama students for this fall show, but the crew is anyone who applied for a position and had a certain grade point average,” Goodnow said.

Auditions were held in September and the cast has been rehearsing four days a week for about 10 weeks. The last two weeks were technical rehearsals, when rehearsals were held twice a day. The cast spends about 150 hours putting the play one; 200 for the musicals. The set was designed and built by Ruth Enriquez-Bague, the migrant education teacher, who also rented the costumes.

“She has her own crew of 10 or so students and does an amazing job,” Goodnow said. “I design the rest and have people build it; this year Handy Home SLO built some of our pieces.”

The story, Goodnow said, “is an adaptation of the story of Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey from an embittered, ungenerous creature into a giving, caring human being at the hands of three spirits, who, one Christmas Eve, show him what life means. This richly textured play brings the full spirit of the book, as well as those of Christmases Past, Present and Yet To Come, to life on the stage.”

“Audience members can expect the magic of this show to really come out in this production,” Goodnow said. “The students are in charge when we get to show time and you will be amazed at how professional they are and what they are capable of.”

The performing arts center holds up to 246 people. Goodnow said that the second weekend tends to sell out faster than the first. She recommends that children 5 and younger not attend because it’s pretty scary, which she said she’s really bringing out in the production.

“I would take my niece, who is 6, but would explain a lot before I brought her,” Goodnow said. “I would not bring anyone younger than 5 because of the length and material.”

Tickets are still available by going to Ticket Leap. Tickets are $8 for seniors and children and $10 for adults.
