City recognizes police for outstanding service
Council gives recognition to staff who responded to officer-involved shooting
The following employees of the Paso Robles Police Department received a special commendation from the Paso Robles City Council this week for “displaying outstanding bravery” in the performance of their duties on the night a California Highway Patrol officer was shot by a suspect in downtown Paso Robles:
- Communications Dispatcher Donna King
- Officer Jeff Depetro
- Officer Nick Bier-Stanberry
- Officer Antonio C. Ruiz
- Officer Lance O’Brien
- Sergeant David Opheim
From the recognition:
On Oct. 27, 2013 at about 5:41 a.m. the police department received information that a CHP officer was in pursuit of a vehicle into the city on Spring Street from northbound Highway 101. Police dispatcher Donna King fielded this and was the only dispatcher on duty during this series of events. Sergeant David Opheim and officers Depetro, Bier-Stanberry, Ruiz and O’Brien responded to the call.
A foot pursuit began in the downtown when the suspect fled. The officers tried to contain the area and the CHP officer became engaged in a gun battle with the suspect. Paso Robles police responded safely by assisting the CHP officer and taking the armed suspect into custody.
