Crowds enjoy full weekend of activities during first weekend of California Mid-State Fair

The California Mid-State Fair is often referred to as “The Biggest Little Fair Anywhere” and, if the crowds over the weekend were any indication, its also the place to get the most entertainment value for your buck. From the unseasonably cool weather and the packed concert arenas to the cotton candy, carousel, and carnival, the weekend crowds took in all the best that Paso Robles has to offer this time of year. Originally known as the San Luis Obispo County Fair, it first opened in 1946.

On Friday, the entertainment lineup held something for everyone. Lifehouse with special guest Hot Chelle Rae took over the Chumash Grandstand Arena. Lifehouse performed such hits as “Hanging by a Moment,” “You and Me”, and “First Time.” The free concerts for the evening had High Voltage at the Frontier Stage and El Desayuno at the Mission Square Stage.

The Fab Four — a Beatles tribute band that played the Mid-State Fair previously in 2011 — returned to a standing-room only crowd Saturday night at the Grandstand. A special treat for the young and the young at heart, this concert was offered free of charge. By the singing and dancing going on throughout the night, there is little doubt that the concert-goers would have happily paid to see the group’s record-perfect live performances of such classics as “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Yesterday,” “Here Comes The Sun,” “Hey Jude,” “Imagine,” and more while undergoing three costume changes to reflect the many eras of the Beatles. On the Frontier Stage, Wild the Coyote provided entertainments;El Desayuno appeared at the Mission Square Stage.

Sunday had the Grandstand crowd on their feet as MKTO and The New Officials started the evening off before Demi Lovato took the stage. Lovato had the crowd singing along to “Neon Lights, “Made in the USA” and “Heart Attack” On the Frontier Stage, Banda Machos performed to a standing-room-only crowd while the Code Blues took to the Mission Square Stage.

Throughout the fairgrounds, families, teens, and young couples walking hand-in-hand could be seen enjoying all that the weekend had to offer. The Carnival area was filled to capacity with kids on the carousel while others grabbed up their fill of cotton candy, corn dogs, special treats, and all things fried that just seem to taste a little bit better at the fair.

The Mid-State Fair continues through July 27. For a full list of activities, including concerts, demonstrations, and competitions, visit www.midstatefair.com and see the daily schedule at pasoroblesdailynews.com.
