Paso Robles High School’s Crimson news magazine recently earned 5th place Best of Show at the Fall 2014 NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Washington, D.C. The Crimson also placed 6th in the news magazine division that identifies the 10 best magazines at the 6200-student, 400-school convention.

This is the program’s eighth consecutive top-ten finish in various divisions since 2008. Additionally, eight students from PRHS journalism placed in the top 12% in individual competition with over 2000 students from other states.

“I would like to congratulate all of our students and staff involved with the Crimson”, said Paso School’s Superintendent, Chris Williams. “Being one of the top five in the nation is a great accomplishment and reward for all of their hard work and commitment.”

The Crimson news magazine produces print and on-line media in a 27-student journalism program that has received five consecutive NSPA All-American rankings. The program is also the reigning Best Newspaper in the tri-county area of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.

Paso Robles High School seniors Carly Cargill, Rachel Cole, Brandon Kearns, and Emily Ayer are two- and three-year journalism students who lead the program as chief editor and managing editors. Teacher Jeff Mount advises the Crimson. He has taught high school journalism for 21 years and high school English for 25 years. He was the 2012 PRPS District Teacher of the Year.
