Cuesta College celebrates Dia de los Muertos

getprevActivities planned at both campuses

–This October, several activities are planned in honor of Dia de los Muertos on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo and North County campuses. Observed on Nov. 1, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a centuries old tradition with indigenous roots in Mexico that celebrates the lives of those who have died.

“These celebrations may seem macabre to those who have never been exposed to them before; our goal is for the public to participate and experience joyful ways to remember their loved ones,” said Cuesta College CaFE Centers specialist Diane Limon. “When celebrating Dia de los Muertos, families will traditionally decorate the graves of their loved ones and build altars in their home adorned with photographs, food and treasured possessions. The holiday is gaining popularity in the United States as people seek to find meaningful ways to connect with their departed loved ones.”

The following activities are free and open to the public:

Sugar skull workshop
Decorate sugar skulls, learn about the components of an altar and how to personalize your own. Free parking will be available in parking lot 2 on the San Luis Obispo Campus and lot 11 on the North County Campus.
• October 12, 4 to 6 p.m., SLO Campus, Cultural Center, Room 5104 A & B
• October 13, 5 to 7 p.m., North County Campus, Dallons Hall, Room N3102

Gallery of altars
October 24 – November 3. View altars on display at the North County Campus in the lobby of the Schwartz Learning Resource Center (building N3100) and in various locations on the San Luis Obispo Campus.

The events are sponsored by the Cuesta College Student Equity Plan and the Latina Leadership Network student and staff chapters. For questions, contact Diane Limon at (805) 591-6200, ext. 4214 or dlimon@cuesta.edu.
