Cuesta College named ‘Military Friendly’ school

–For the second year in a row, Cuesta College is designated a “Military Friendly School” by Victory Media. The designation is awarded to the top colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.Cuesta

“Being designated a Military Friendly School two years in a row validates the ongoing work of Cuesta College to support our veterans,” said Dr. John Cascamo, Cuesta College’s dean of economic workforce and development and a current Air National Guardsman. “Our goal is to help these men and women translate their military experience into a college degree or certificate so they can advance in the civilian workforce and bring their talents back to their communities.”

Institutions qualified for the designation by completing a survey of over 100 questions covering ten categories, including military support on campus, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies.

Cuesta College currently serves more than 200 veterans annually and has a dedicated Veterans Resource Center on the San Luis Obispo Campus, where veterans, reservists and military dependents as well as prospective students with military experience can learn about available benefits, connect with one another, and become active in other aspects of campus life.

“The Veterans Resource Center is the heart of the college’s veteran community and provides an atmosphere of empathy and respect borne of shared experiences,” said Cuesta College Veterans Resource Center Coordinator Karen Andrews. “We offer one-on-one assistance in order to ensure that our many veterans have a positive experience at Cuesta College as well as feel supported along each step of their educational journey.”

Cuesta College also offers free parking permits to veterans who attend college orientations through the “Mike” program in honor of former Cuesta College student and Army National Guardsman Mike Mihalakis, who was killed in 2003 while serving in Iraq.

Military Friendly provides service members transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities. For the full listing of schools, click here.
