City’s 4th of July celebration will be a blast

With a theme of “Old Fashioned 4th of July”, the Paso Robles 4th of July celebration will have something for everyone to enjoy at City Park. Beginning with a Children’s Parade at 11 a.m. that will go around City Park, all children are invited to dress themselves, their bicycles or wagons, their stick ponies, and even their dogs or cats in red, white, and blue and show off their best wishes for our Nation’s Birthday. Several streets around the Park will be closed for the Parade. This free event is sponsored by the Children’s Museum. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

After the Parade and beginning at noon until 4 p.m., there will be fun, games, and music in the Park (most activities are free), including such old favorites as sack races, 3-legged races, and watermelon eating contests. There will be new favorites such as Frisbee golf, beach volleyball, and lawn bowling.

A special event will be a dunk tank where several local luminaries will challenge ball tossers to dunk them. Calvary Chapel Paso Robles will have fun games for little kids. Niblick Road Baptist Church will offer free popcorn, snow cones, and cotton candy. Boy Scout Troop 60 will sell tri-tip sandwiches, hamburgers, and hot dogs. Kettle corn will be available, too. Several local authors, including Milene Radford, Lester Rougeot, and Danyce Gustafson will be signing their books from 3-5 p.m. at the Historical Society inside Carnegie Library.

Concerts in the Park will begin at 5 p.m. featuring popular rock and roll band “The Usual Suspects” and presented by the Rotary Club of Paso Robles and the Pioneer Day Committee. At 6:30 p.m. a special patriotic “Salute to America” will commemorate the Birthday of our Nation. All military active duty personnel, retirees, and veterans will be asked to step forward to the bandstand to salute the Flag and lead everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Star Spangled Banner will be sung and other special elements will be presented, including a planned flyover of the Estrella Warbirds “Freedom Flight”. The 2014 Pioneer Day Queen and Marshall will be announced by the Pioneer Day Committee. You won’t want to miss this event! “The Usual Suspects” will return and entertain until 8:30 p.m.

At about 9:15 p.m. the best fireworks show on the Central Coast will begin, organizers say. The show will launch next to the City Hall/Library building and will be visible from many locations in the city, including the westside and the eastside from the bluffs near the Salinas River overlooking downtown.

Parking near the downtown area will be impacted through the day. The parking lot behind City Hall and streets surrounding City Hall will be “No Parking” on the 4th of July. Spring Street, 12th Street, Pine Street, and 11th Street around the Park will be closed for the Parade.

Other closures: 10th and 11th streets between Spring and Park and Park between 10th and 11th will be closed all day. Spring Street between 9th and 12th will be closed during the fireworks. As always, dogs, alcoholic beverages, and personal BBQs are not allowed in City Park. Adult beverages are allowed only in the designated area of the park during the Concerts in the Park.

Volunteers are needed to monitor the parade route in the morning and the fireworks exclusion zone through the day and evening. This is a wonderful way to give back to the community, to have some fun, and to help keep everyone safe. Volunteers receive a special T-shirt, reserved parking, and a food voucher usable at several venues. Contact Al Garcia at (805) 226-9262 or email al.garcia@pacbell.net to volunteer.
