Educators walking John Muir Trail to raise funds for students
Winifred Pifer Elementary School 5th grade teacher Deb Baca and Principal Carol Stoner are dedicating 30 days of their summer vacation, July 1–30, to hiking 220 miles on the John Muir Trail to raise awareness and funding for student participation in science and environmental education field trips.
All donations and pledges for miles walked will go directly to support the following outdoor experiences for Winifred Pifer students:
- Rancho El Chorro Outdoor School: 4th graders attend the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education outdoor school for 3 days and 2 nights. They explore and learn environmental concepts in a natural “hands-on” setting that brings textbook learning to life.
- Central Coast Aquarium: 5th graders become marine biologist for a day and attend the aquarium to learn about local marine habitat, explore the world of our ocean beneath the surface through outdoor excursions, laboratory lessons, and hands-on exhibits.
- Oceano State Park
- Estuary in Morro Bay
- Elephant Seals north of San Simeon
Each donation or pledge will contribute to Winifred Pifer students at each grade level in participating in field trips that enhance their education of our environment and science. To send 75 fourth-graders to Rancho El Chorro next year, it is estimated to cost $15,000 which is a challenging amount of funding to raise in one year.
To make a tax-deductible donation to the Winifred Pifer PTA, Tax ID# 95-6206825, checks can be mailed to:
