Fort Hunter Liggett locked down on report of active shooter

Fort Hunter Liggett on lock down

There was an active shooter reported at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon at Fort Hunter Liggett, a US Army base north west of Paso Robles in Monterey County.

The fort was immediately locked down and searches were conducted in the Cantonment area, Schoonover Air Strip, and the Tusi Heliport, according to officials at the base.

After the searches were completed there was no evidence of a shooting and no injuries reported, officials said. The lock down was lifted at 7 p.m.

The reporting of the shooter is currently under investigation.

Fort Hunter Liggett, a US Army Garrison, is named after General Hunter Liggett. It was established in 1941. Land for the fort was purchased in 1940 from William Randolph Hearst. The fort is primarily used as a training facility, where activities such as field maneuvers and live fire exercises are performed. There are only 250 permanent civil and military residents at the fort. However, the population can swell up to 4,000 when a rotation of personnel comes for training.
