Grass fire burns riverbed off Niblick bridge

fire near niblick bridge

A grass fire burned the riverbed north of the Niblick Road bridge Sunday afternoon. The blaze filled the sky above the Albertson’s shopping center with gray and black smoke.

Paso Robles police and fire departments responded to the scene at about 4:20 p.m. Two engines and three patrol cars were quickly at the scene.

Authorities gained access to the fire from the alley behind the grocery store at Niblick and South River roads. First arriving units determined that about one acre of brush was on fire in the riverbed. Firefighters completed a progressive hoselay from the shopping center to surrounded the fire. The smoke turned white as the fire was declared controlled at 4:49 p.m. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Department of Emergency Services fire investigators.

No structures were damaged by the fire and no injuries were reported. Firefighters will remain at the scene for several hours completing mop-up.

A total of 17 firefighters from the Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services and Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County Fire responded to the fire. Paso Robles Police Department assisted with traffic control.
