Hazel Hamilton dies at 99

–Former Paso Robles resident Hazel Hamilton passed away at the age of 99 on Jan. 13.hazel_hamilton

Born to Russian immigrants, Hamilton was adopted at five years old by California orange growers originally from Iowa. She was raised in Redlands away from her brother and sister who were adopted into separate families, although she was later able to reconnect with them.

Hamilton graduated from both Redlands High School, and University of Redlands, first in class. She married John J Hamilton, a classmate at the University of Redlands.

Hamilton was a teacher for many years at Paso Robles, then Arcadia and Santa Monica Malibu Unified School Districts. She taught mostly grammar school, but also taught occasional years at High School and University level.  She was an early pioneer of racially integrated instruction in Southern California, and was the first woman professor at Matsuyama University of Commerce.

While in Paso Robles, the family attended the Episcopal Church when Henry Ewan was the rector, and were friends with the Ewan family.

She is survived by sons Ben and Allen, and several grandchildren.

The family will be hosting a memorial service on Feb. 20, at Noon at the Westchester United Methodist Church, located at 8065 Emerson, in Los Angeles. A reception will follow next to the main church, in the chapel. A light lunch will be served. Children are welcome to the service. Please RSVP for reception by calling (310) 641-1469

Instead of flowers, the family asks that donations in her honor be made to the Women and Children’s fund run by the Women of United Methodist Church, or the Smiles Program at Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.
