I-5 closures expected to bring heavy traffic to Central Coast

– A full closure of a portion of Interstate 5 near Fort Tejon known as the Grapevine, and Highway 58 near Tehachapi in Kern County will result in additional traffic on US Highway 101 on the Central Coast today according to Caltrans.roads

Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol are alerting motorists to anticipate heavier than normal traffic including an increase in big-rig trucks traveling through the area. It is not known at this time when Interstate 5 and Highway 58 will re-open.

The public may choose to postpone unnecessary trips and drive safely by taking the following steps:

• Reduce speed in rainy, foggy and windy conditions. Motorists should be aware that spot flooding may occur at any time along any roadway section.

• Slow down and/or move over when highway workers, law enforcement or tow truck drivers are working on or near the roadway.

• Be aware of electronic message boards and other road signs with information on incidents, changing road conditions, lane closures or detours.

• Make sure that vehicle brakes, windshield wiper blades and tires are in good condition. Also, inspect head and tail lights for maximum visibility on the highway.

• Call 911 to report any incidents or hazardous roadway conditions.

Caltrans crews and CHP officers are prepared to respond to any flooding, roadway debris or other emergencies that may affect the state highway system during this storm.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway work zones.

The public may view Caltrans network of roadside traffic cameras, at the statewide highway network for current conditions, or the automated California Highway Information Network (CHIN) @ 800-GAS-ROAD. In addition, the CHP has real time traffic incident information available here.
