Is Tumblr good for local businesses?
Should small businesses be using Tumblr?
Tumblr is a microblogging website and social networking platform that is owned and operated by Tumblr, Inc. It’s service allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Users can follow other users’ blogs, as well as make their blogs private. Much of the website’s features are accessed from the “dashboard” interface, where the option to post content and posts of followed blogs appear. It hosts over 108 million blogs.
Yahoo recently saw a lot of value in Tumblr and purchased it on May 20 for over $1 billion. But what can Tumblr do for small businesses?
“We are testing Tumblr for our local clients,” says Scott Brennan, founder of Access Publishing, a local marketing and advertising company. “We have created Tumblr accounts and biographical blog posts for all of our Local Search clients. Brennan sees two benefits of using Tumblr for small businesses:
- Share more of the content you have with potential customers
- Increase your online presence and Internet search rankings by using targeted keywords
The answer is no
Update Aug. 21, 2014: We tracked the progress of our local business Tumblr accounts and found that Tumblr deleted just about every one of them. Even though they were very generic business profiles, Tumblr flagged them as spam. In the final analysis I would say that Tumblr is not good for business and if the pages are deleted, they are not good for SEO or communication with clients and prospects.
