Letter: Mayor addresses oak tree removal

–The recent photos of extensive grading and oak tree removal in the Adelaide area west of Paso Robles are disturbing to say the least.

I view what has happened with deep concern. In the city of Paso Robles we take preservation of our oak trees very seriously. As we have learned with the Paso Robles Basin, water is a critical resource and it must be carefully used. I share all residents’ concerns that misuse of water is unacceptable. And, while grading of land can seem a small problem, it may not be the best way to prepare the land for planting. Erosion, silting of creeks, and the potential for irreparable damage are major concerns.

I am also concerned about the lack of sensitivity shown by massive outside influences for our community, our wonderful environment and our long-established tradition of working together for the benefit of all. Without this sensitivity issues such as this will proliferate in the future, endangering the historic and unique nature of the North County.

As First District Supervisor I would gather all the facts in this case and make sure the land owner and the County staff follow the letter of the law to make sure no further damage is done. I would also maintain the issues of water, drainage and local responsibility for our land as primary concerns for our citizens, businesses and landowners.

Steven W. Martin
Paso Robles Mayor and candidate for First District Supervisor
