Students reach ALS fundraising goal and splash educators

The students at Lewis Middle School, home of the Leopards, accepted the challenge of raising $1,000 for ALS research. Their reward if they reached their goal was to drench the school principals and select school and district staff with ice-filled buckets of water.

On Friday, Sept. 19, it was officially announced that the students had not only met, but exceeded their goal of $1,000. Consequently, at 12:35 p.m., there was a large “ice water dousing” ceremony held on the sports field at Lewis Middle School.

Participants included Principal Stuart Hamill, Vice Principal Mayra Trevino, numerous teachers and some district employees like the new Superintendent of Paso Schools, Chris Williams. Field Gibson, a district board of trustee, also volunteered to be drenched.

“I am continually impressed by the students and staff of Lewis Middle School”, said Principal Hamill. “Not only are they exceptional young people, they are exceptional young people with high character. This began as a challenge, but quickly turned into something much bigger.

“After hearing about the tremendous challenges that people living with ALS face and even learning that several of our staff members have had family affected by ALS, the Lewis family was honored to rally around such a worthy cause. The drenching of the staff is only a small part of what has taken place over the past few weeks.”
