Lions Clubs offer vision screening for local youth

Complimentary vision testing for children started this week

Lions Club Paso RoblesThe Lions Clubs of San Luis Obispo County are on the road again screening K – High School students with vision testing. The first screening was Wednesday at Lillian Larson Elementary School in San Miguel. The testing then moves on to Almond Acres Charter School, Shandon Elementary School, and to all schools within the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District, Templeton Unified School District, Lucia Mar Unified School District, San Luis Coastal Unified School District and concluded on November 19, 2013 at Atascadero High School within the Atascadero Unified School District.

September 16 – Pat Butler Elementary School
September 17 – Bauer-Speck Elementary School
September 18 – Georgia Brown Elementary School
September 19 – Winifred Pifer Elementary School
September 20 – Virginia Peterson Elementary School

The 47+ screenings throughout the county this fall are made possible through the funding and volunteer work of the San Luis Obispo County Lions Clubs, School District nurses and staff, Optometrist Doug Major and other local optometrists.

The Lion’s Eyesight Testing Trailer will travel throughout various schools in San Luis Obispo County, where the local Lion’s Clubs donate time and money to oversee the free programming in their areas. The eye screening trailer is donated by the Atascadero Lion’s Club.

The SLO Lions School Children’s Eye Disorders Identified program monitors and detects vision problems early, and prevents and treats permanent damage. All children attending public schools as well as larger private schools in San Luis Obispo County receive the professional diagnostic exam by a Doctor of Optometry. The Lions Preschool Vision Screening program is supported by First Five providing diagnostic vision assessment for all Kindergarten student and most children attending Head Start or a Preschool in the county.

Since its beginnings in the 1960’s, SLO Lions School Children’s Eye Disorders Identified program has screened over one million children, identifying tens of thousands of local children with an eye disorder. Early Vision Diagnosis and treatment is vital to ensure a child’s academic success.

Lions Club International is recognized for service to preventing blindness and the visually impaired. In addition, each local chapter conducts a variety of other local projects and activities designed to improve the community and help people in need.
