Paso Robles resident James Brescia announced this week his candidacy for the office of San Luis Obispo County superintendent of schools. The announcement came with the news that current county superintendent of schools, Julian Crocker, is retiring at the end of the year when his term ends.

Crocker endorsed Brescia in his retirement message: “Dr. Brescia has the academic training as well as successful teaching and administrative experience in the county to continue the mission of the County Office of Education of promoting student success by supporting local school districts, providing specialized services for students and giving countywide leadership for public education. Dr. Brescia has the support of the other district superintendents in our county and the senior
administrative staff of the County Office of Education.”

Brescia is the current superintendent for the Cayucos Elementary School District. Prior to that he was the longtime principal at St. Rose Catholic School in Paso Robles. Born in Lynwood, California and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Brescia received his undergraduate degree and teaching credentials from the University of California, San Diego.

“I am passionate and committed to working collectively with our school district leaders, staff, community partners and parents to provide all students with equal access to a high quality education that includes the humanities,” says Brescia. “As a longtime local educator, college instructor, administrator and school district superintendent, I bring a perspective that will assist in preparing our children to meet the demands of the 21st Century.”

Outgoing superintendent Crocker was first elected in 1998 and subsequently re-elected to three successive four year terms. Prior to serving as the county superintendent he served as the superintendent of the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District for nine years. His term ends Jan. 5, 2015.
