Sadie Mae Mace receives national scholarship from American Legion

–Paso Robles High School Senior Sadie Mae Mace has recently been awarded the Samsung American Legion Scholarship of $20,000.

Scholarships are reserved for high school juniors who attended the organization’s weeklong intensive and are direct descendants of a veteran who served in active duty during wartime. Both of Sadie’s parents have served in the military. Last year, only 10 $20,000 scholarships were awarded nationally.

Earlier this year as a junior, Mace was selected as the Paso Robles High School delegate to attend the annual Girls State weeklong intensive held at Claremont McKenna College. Girls participated in hands-on learning about US government and were chosen to attend based on leadership qualities, community service and academic honors. During the event, Mace was selected as the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship which qualified her for the $20,000 national scholarship award.

“As parents, we are exceptionally proud to see Sadie Mae accept this scholarship,” said her mother, Christina Mace. “Her desire to learn more has always been rooted in her passion for making the world a better place for humans and animals. We have no doubt that she will use this scholarship towards her dream to study abroad or attend Semester at Sea so as to experience all that the world has to offer.

The weeklong intensive is described as a “leadership program of the American Legion Auxiliary designed to increase awareness and knowledge of governmental processes while learning about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship.” Delegates leave with a greater appreciation of the American flag and of the sacrifices made by veterans.

Scholarship provider, The American Legion, is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization who is committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of various programs in communities around the US, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and a continued devotion to service-members and veterans.
