St. Patrick's Day

A group of Paso Robles locals celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at Pappy MacGregor’s on Monday afternoon.

Pappy MacGregorsAbout 50 loyal St. Patrick’s Day revelers began celebrating at 6 a.m. Monday morning when the doors opened at Pappy MacGregor’s Pub and Grill in downtown Paso Robles. By noon, over 100 had joined in Ireland’s national day of celebration. Bartenders poured beer and whiskey to hundreds of locals throughout the day. Locals came dressed up in green with hats, necklaces and lucky charms. Live music started at 2.p.m., including local favorite Sound House. A D.J. was planned for later, to keep the party going till 2 a.m.

It’s an annual tradition in Paso Robles. “We opened on St. Patrick’s Day in 2006,” said Donovan Schmit, co-owner if Pappy MacGregor’s. “This is our eighth anniversary today,” he said. He and his cousin Troy Larkin own Pappy’s. It’s named after great-grandfather Pappy McGregor Schmit, who built bars in Ireland. The pub was first opened as the Crooked Kilt.

The Irish holiday is celebrated in honor of the country’s patron saint, St. Patrick, who lived from from 385–461 A.D. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland as well as celebrating the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.
