Man reportedly falls asleep at wheel, drives off Cuesta Grade into ravine

crash on cuesta grade

–On Wednesday, at approximately 2 p.m., California Highway Patrol responded to a call where Kenneth Munn, a 30-year-old Santa Cruz man, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and drove across multiple lanes of Highway 101 on the Cuesta Grade before crashing into a concrete wall and plunging into a ravine.

Munn, who was wanted for parole violation, was subsequently arrested, according to California Highway Patrol Public Informations Officer J.W. Townsen. He is currently being held at the county jail awaiting arraignment.

Munn, who sustained mild injuries, reportedly said that he was very tired, and hadn’t slept in a few days. Munn said he was driving his friend’s rental car, a 2016 gray Nissian Maxima, southbound on the grade on the San Luis Obispo side near Old Stagecoach Road, when he fell asleep and drifted across the road, striking a brick wall and landing in a ravine near San Luis Creek. He then attempted to walk away from the scene.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash, according to Townsen.
