Morro Bay celebrate’s its 50th anniversary with a parade

Morro Bay 50th Parade

Morro Bay celebrated its 50th anniversary as a city with a parade through town Saturday.

Jeff Weidler of Paso Robles had the honor of driving Morro Bay’s 93-year-old Grand Marshall, Wachtang “Botso” Korisheli, in his 64 T-Bird in the parade. “He is quite famous in Morro Bay and they wanted an authentic convertible of the same vintage as the cities anniversary – 1964,” said Weidler. “I was happy to help.”

Korisheli was selected as the Grand Marshall of Morro Bay’s 50th Celebration Parade because of his significant contributions to the culture and heritage of the city. Botso is a classically trained pianist, painter, sculptor and teacher who arrived in Morro Bay in 1957. His granite sculpture “Pelican Family” sits at the end of Morro Bay Boulevard an his “Giant Chessboard” in Centennial Park delights locals and visitors alike.

The parade was part of a year-long celebration that has included several events, with more to come. For a calendar of upcoming Morro Bay celebrations, click here.
