Naturalist hosting ‘Fungus Foray’ walk at Elfin Forest

pygmy oak forest on Morro bay estuarySmall Wilderness Area Preservation or SWAP will have walk leader and fungophile Dennis Sheridan lead a, “Fungus Foray,” through the Elfin Forest in Los Osos on Saturday, Feb. 20, 9:30 a.m.

The walk will be an exploration of fascinating mushrooms such as wood bluetts, black elfin saddles, earthstars, golden caps, boletes, and poisonous amanitas. Bring a magnifying lens and, if you have a mystery mushroom in your yard, bring a sample for Sheridan to identify. This is not a mushroom collecting walk. All plants in the Elfin Forest are protected by law. Only a very heavy rain will cancel the walk.

Meet at the north end of 15th Street off of Santa Ysabel in Los Osos. Wear comfortable shoes, long sleeves and pants to avoid poison oak. Park carefully, avoiding driveways and mailboxes and leave pets at home.

The easy paced walk will last 1 to 1-1/2 hours. For more information call (805) 528-0392
