Open riders competing at NRCHA Derby 

Travelin Jonez and Chris Dawson Lead Open Composite; This One Time and Bergen Win Reining

Open riders at the NRCHA Derby in Paso Robles, Calif., came one step closer to finding out who will advance to the finals, with the completion of the rein work preliminaries Wednesday, June 12 at the Paso Robles Event Center.

The top rein work score in the Open division, a 224.5, belongs to This One Time (One Time Pepto x Katie Starlight x Grays Starlight), shown by NRCHA Million-Dollar Rider Todd Bergen, Eagle Point, Ore., for owner Pam Bailey. Bergen and This One Time were the 2012 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Reserve Champions.

The overall composite leader, with a 443.5, is Travelin Jonez (Smart Chic Olena x Travelin With Sass x Travalena), owned and shown by Chris Dawson, Jacksboro, Texas. Riding in the hackamore, Dawson guided the 5-year-old stallion to a 220 in the herd work on Monday, and then scored a 223.5 in the rein work Wednesday afternoon.

In the Derby Intermediate Open, John Ward, Kingsburg, Calif., rode the Ward Ranch-bred and -owned Gotta Go Get It (Smart Little Pepinic x Got Mister x Mister Dual Pep) to a 220.5 rein work preliminary score to top the round.

The Derby Limited Open rein work preliminary winner was Wright Stylish (Lenas Wright On x Stylish Little Lady x Playin Stylish). The 2008 gelding, owned and shown by Richard Winters, Ojai, Calif., scored a 219. Winters and Wright Stylish also lead the Limited Open preliminary composite, with a 432 (213 herd/219 rein) after the first two events.

The top score in the Novice Horse Open rein work belongs to Shining Cinderella (Shining Spark x Cats Okey Dokey x Docs Oak). Jake Telford, Caldwell, Idaho, guided the 2008 mare to a 219.5. Shining Cinderella is owned by Bob and Bonnie Schwenkfelder, Meridian, Idaho.

Intermediate Open
The overall preliminary leader in the Derby Intermediate Open is Jamminalena (Quejanaisalena x Bobbie Gay Bingo x Bingo Hickory), shown by Nicolas Barthelemy, Descanso, Calif. Barthelemy piloted the 2008 gelding to a total 434.5 score (216 herd/ 218.5 rein). Jamminalena is owned by Sheri Jamieson.

Limited Open

Open Novice Horse
Luke Neubert, Paso Robles, Calif., rode his own horse, This Cats Crackin (WR This Cats Smart x Stressin x Dual Pep) to a total 434.5 score (219.5 herd/215 rein) to lead the Open Novice Horse division.

The NRCHA Derby continues Thursday, June 13 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific, when all Open and Non-Pro competitors show in the final preliminary event, the cow work.

Stuart Bozeman wins rein work round in all Non-Pro divisions; Laurie Ward leads Non-Pro composite

Bozeman scored a 218 aboard his 4-year-old gelding, Merada In Style 09 (Cats Merada x Stylish In White x Docs Stylish Oak). Bozeman has a 423 composite herd work and rein work score, which puts him in 12th place in

the Derby Non-Pro; 7th in the Intermediate; 6th in the Novice and first in the Amateur.

In the Derby Non-Pro Limited division, the high-scoring rein work belonged to Linda Wood, who piloted Cee Mr Cats Merada (Cats Merada x Cee Miss Money Rio x Doc Quixote) to a 212.5.

Non-Pro
The overall lead in the Derby Non-Pro belongs to Laurie Ward and Pumped Up Kix (Smart Little Pepinic x Olivias Response), a 2009 gelding owned by Ward Ranch. They have a 430 on two events (213 herd/217 rein)

Intermediate Non-Pro & Novice Non-Pro
Jennifer Neel leads the Intermediate and Novice Non-Pro divisions with a 429.5 (216.5 herd/213 rein). She is riding Ze Kit Cat (Zezes Pepto Cat x Hickorys Diabola x Doc’s Hickory), a 4-year-old mare bred and owned by her parents, Tom and Lorna Neel.

Amateur
Stuart Bozeman and Merada In Style 09 lead the Amateur with a 423 (205 herd/218 rein) – read more above. There are no finals in the Derby Amateur; the Champion will be determined after the preliminary cow work.

Non-Pro Limited
Barbara Truex DVM leads the Derby Non-Pro Limited division with a 420 (209 herd/211 rein) aboard her 4-year-old gelding, Nic It Starlight (Nic It In the Bud x Okie Starbella x Grays Starlight). There are no finals in the Derby Non-Pro Limited; the Champion will be determined after the preliminary cow work.
