Women’s volleyball program’s basic costs offset by annual fundraiser

Bearcat volleyball alumni gather together after last year’s alumni volleyball game.

For the second year in a row the Paso Robles High School women’s volleyball program will host an alumni fundraiser game. On Saturday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. at the Gil Asa Gym on the high school campus, alumni volleyball players will have the chance to play the game with current Bearcat volleyball players.

“Every year it’s growing in popularity along with the excitement for it,” said alumna Brandi Stansbury, who graduated from Paso High in 1996. “Christy (Arnette) Byham was really instrumental in putting this together last year [because] all the high school programs can all use community support [due to budget cuts].”

Stansbury said that the money raised from the game will go to the women’s volleyball program at Paso High to help with the cost of jerseys and traveling to tournaments.

“[Just] basic operational money,” Stansbury said. “With budget cuts, players are having to buy their own uniforms … so this is our chance to give back to them.”

For its first year, Stansbury said there were about 15 alumni at the event and she expects to have the same amount and maybe a few more this time around. The alumni players will ranged in age from just-graduated to those in their 40s. For those alumni unable to make the game because of scheduling or distance, T-shirts are available on the game’s EvenBrite page.

“Even though they can’t make the game they are there in spirit,” Stansbury said. “I think [the game] is a great opportunity for the current players to get fired up about how great the women’s volleyball program has been at Paso High.”

She said that the game won’t really be alumni vs. current players, but more mixing it up so the current players can play with alumni, which include players from the 1988 and 1996 CIF Championship teams.

“We really hope to see some old and new faces support the program,” Stansbury said.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students and children. The Bearcat Boosters will be on hand selling tri-tip barbecue meals that include a sandwich, beans and a drink for $12 and hot dogs for $2 each. There will also be a raffle with prizes from the General Store Paso Robles, Villa Creek, La Cosecha, Thomas Hill Organics, Boo Boo Records, We Olive, Give Fitness, Papi’s and more. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each, five for $6, 14 for $10 and 30 for $20.
