Annual celebration of friendship and heritage on Oct. 12 in Paso Robles

Bring the entire family out to the 83rd Annual Pioneer Day celebration in downtown Paso Robles on Saturday, Oct. 12 as the community celebrates its rich heritage and “Life on the Farm.” Festivities kick off early in the morning with contest judging before the start of the Pioneer Day Parade at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day and into the early.

From the littlest cowboy to the old-timers, there is something for everyone to enjoy and the best part – it’s all free! Start the day with the always-popular Pioneer Day Parade – be sure to bring a lawn chair, blanket, and a snack or two. The parade route starts at 17th and Spring Streets and ends surrounding the Paso Robles City Park. Onlookers will see running antique tractors – lots of them – as well as horse drawn wagons, marching bands, mounted equestrian groups, dancers, floats, fire engines, vintage cars, military cars and more.

Festivities take place all day long on Pioneer Day. Bright and early on Saturday morning, come watch preparations for the annual cooking of the beans starting at 7 a.m. in the City Park. Volunteers set up camp and begin cooking about 1,200 pounds of beans and 400 pounds of hamburger needed for the annual Pioneer Day Bean Feed. The beans, cooked in huge vats, will be served by local firefighters and other volunteers after the parade.

The very first Pioneer Day, held on Oct, 12, 1931, was organized by community volunteers working with generous donations of time, materials and money from individuals, businesses, churches and service organizations. Their goal was to provide a day of community friendship and a commemoration of the heritage of the Paso Robles area. It would also become a day set aside to say “Thank You” to all of the people who support the business and professional community of the area throughout the year. Most businesses closed so that their employees could enjoy and participate in the activities and family reunions. There were to be no charges for any of the events, no commercial concessions and lunch would be provided at no cost.

The fun continues into 2013 and, just as always, it’s entirely funded by the business people and dedicated citizens of the Paso Robles area who say, “Leave your pocketbook at home” and join your neighbors in a celebration of friendship.
