Knights gain upper hand over the Bearcats in double overtime

War Memorial Stadium in Paso Robles held all the makings of a perfect homecoming night for the Paso Robles High School varsity football team on Friday – a large hometown crowd sporting their crimson and white, a spectacular half-time show, the crowning of the king and queen, and what looked to be a victory for Paso Robles – until the visiting St. Joseph Knights tied it up 10-10 in the final minutes of regulation time and ultimately claimed a 17-10 double-overtime victory over the Bearcats.

The Bearcats kept the Knights from scoring throughout most of the game and put numbers on the scoreboard early when Nathanial Harris scored for Paso Robles on a 3-yard touchdown run towards the end of the first quarter and Bryce Pasky added the PAT.

Harris finished with 114 yards rushing on 35 carries.

Paso held on to their 7-0 lead heading into halftime but the Knights battled back and kept the Bearcats from scoring in the third quarter. Pasky added a 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give the Bearcats a 10-0 lead in what looked to be a shutout homecoming game.

But the Knights had no intentions of bringing home a loss and, with less than 3 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, quarterback Curry Parham tossed a touchdown pass to Gabe Becerra and Jon Chartier added the PAT to give St. Joseph 7 points to the Bearcats’ 10.

The Knights tied the game 10-10 with less than 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter with a Chartier field goal and the two teams advanced into overtime play. After failed scoring attempts in the first overtime, the Paso Robles and St. Joseph players had the crowd on both sides of the stadium on their feet as they headed into their second overtime.

The Knights (5-2) sealed the deal with a 3-yard touchdown run by Mateo Becerra and, after Chartier added the PAT, handed the Bearcats a shocking 17-10 homecoming loss.

The Paso Robles Bearcats (5-2) football team is on the road to Santa Maria this Friday night to face the Pioneer Valley Panthers (2-5). The junior varsity plays at 4 p.m. and the varsity takes the field at 7 p.m.
