Paso Robles water rights group hosts open house

PRAAGSThe Paso Robles Agricultural Alliance for Groundwater Solutions (PRAAGS) is reaching out to Paso Robles Groundwater Basin overliers and welcoming community members to a second open house event.

“These efforts continue the group’s Paso Robles Fair Water Initiative to work with stakeholders to establish a district to balance and manage the Paso Robles Groundwater Basin,” according to a statement from PRAAGS. The event will take place at the Estrella Warbird Museum on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at  at 4251 Dry Creek Road in Paso Robles.

During the open house, a brief presentation will touch on the San Luis Obispo County urgency ordinance, its impact on the region and why it cannot address the long-term needs of the area, the statement said. “The presentation will also identify why the region needs a water management structure that is established and governed by locals, has the ability to obtain supplemental water and also implement water management protocol established by a robust AB3030.”

Following the presentation, a breakout session will allow attendees to visit stations to learn more from area experts and PRAAGS members.

The Paso Robles Fair Water Initiative encompasses efforts to establish a modified California water district by acquiring petition signatures to request an election. The initiative also includes working on special legislation to enhance the standard off-the-shelf district to include a modified and flexible board made up of equitable, representative divisions as well as powers to implement a robust AB3030 management plan.

This second open house is for those who were unable to attend the first open house, which was held on Nov. 13 and attended by more than 250 people, and for those who want to learn more after the first meeting.

PRAAGS was organized by local agricultural leaders including Jerry Reaugh, Sereno Vista Vineyard, Dana Merrill, Mesa Vineyard Management, Steve Sinton, Avenales Cattle Co., John Crossland, Vineyard Professional Services, Kent Gilmore, Golden Hills Farm, Steve Lohr, J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines, Matt Turrentine, Grapevine Land Management, Kathleen Maas, Pear Valley Vineyards.
