Update at 2:30 p.m.: On Oct. 9 at approximately 3:27 a.m. officers from the Atascadero Police Department were dispatched to the area of the 11000 block of Halcon Road regarding numerous shots being heard in the area. The shots were described as being in rapid succession and possibly from a rifle. Officers arrived on scene as the shots were still being fired.

Officers could hear the rounds impacting something nearby as they were being fired. The officers believed they were being fired at by suspects. Members of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol responded to assist and a perimeter was established on the suspected residence. Members of the Atascadero Police Department’s Investigative Unit were notified and responded to the scene as well.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail (S.E.D.), the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, was requested and responded to assist. A search warrant was sought for the residence. All the occupants of the residence, four in total, eventually surrendered and were detained. The search warrant was served and an AR-15 rifle was recovered in the residence along with approximately 40 shell casings in the backyard of the residence. This is a residential area with numerous residences in close proximity to where this incident occurred. This made the situation very dangerous for residences in the area but no injuries or property damage occurred.

Suspects Christopher Stephens, 28, and Brian Sims, 24, both residents of Atascadero, were arrested and ultimately charged with Discharge of a Firearm with Gross Negligence and a City of Atascadero municipal code violation of Discharge of a Firearm within City Limits. Both Stephens and Sims were transported and booked at county jail.
