Registration open for Big Sur Mud Run

big sur mud runThe Big Sur Mud Run opened registration on December 1 with an enlarged capacity of 4,000 participants.  Four hundred 5-person teams and 2,000 individuals can sign up at www.bigsurmudrun.org for the spring race scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2013.

Runners come from around the country to participate in the Big Sur Mud Run, held on the campus of California State University Monterey Bay and adjacent land under the control of the U.S. Army and Fort Ord Reuse Authority.  The course is approximately 5.5 miles and includes four mud pits and other obstacles.  The age limit for running the course has also been lowered from 15 to 12 years old.

Utilizing volunteer military personnel from the Presidio of Monterey and the Naval Postgraduate School, the popular race has a strong military flavor.  Soldiers and Marines lead warm up calisthenics, guide runners into mud pits, bark orders to climb walls, do push ups and ‘get down’ for low crawls under camouflage netting, and more.

Proceeds from the event benefit various youth programs including the Presidio of Monterey’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation division, Cal State Monterey Bay’s athletic department and the Big Sur International Marathon’s youth fitness program, JUST RUN®.
