Resident gets help from city to slow down neighborhood traffic

Raul Torres

Raul Torres is a man on a mission. After finding a dead cat, killed from speeding traffic in his neighborhood, he took the issue to the city council.

Local resident Raul Torres spoke to the Paso Robles City Council at its last meeting and asked for help with traffic speeding through his Montebello Oaks neighborhood. City leaders listened and stepped in to help.

Electronic-speed-signTorres has been asking the city for help to slow down residential traffic since 2010, but the situation got worse over the last couple weeks. Construction on Union Road is now forcing fast-moving traffic through the residential neighborhoods along Skyview, Montebello Oaks and Kleck roads. After finding a dead cat, killed from speeding traffic in his neighborhood, he took the issue to the city council.

“I held up my poster and showed them the detour which includes Kleck Road that does not have any posted 25 MPH signs nor does it have any surface street markings of 25 MPH,” Torres says. “I called on the city council for help.”

At Torres suggestion, Police Chief Robert Burton issued an alert to residents the following day:

“TRAFFIC ALERT – Due to the traffic detours related to the ongoing work on Union Road, there has been an increase in the traffic volume on surrounding residential streets.

Motorists are reminded to obey the 25 MPH speed limits in residential areas. PRPD officers will be monitoring for violations and taking enforcement action as needed.”

“I’m content to see the quick response from Chief Burton,” Torres says.

Torres also asked for electronic speeding signs to be posted while the detour is in effect. The city said the signs are the responsibility of the road construction contractor. Shortly after his complaints, several electronic signs have gone up in the neighborhood.
