Replica ship en route to home port of San Diego

–The replica of the San Salvador departed from Morro Bay around 2:30 Monday afternoon en route to her home port, San Diego.

Hundreds of admirers lined the Embarcadero to watch her sail out into the open ocean. Many shouted messages of gratitude for the San Salvador’s visit.

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed the original San Salvador up the California Coast in 1542. He named Morro Rock, which has served as a landmark to sailors for hundreds of years.

During her week-long stay on the Embarcadero, hundreds of locals and visitors toured the replica of the historic Spanish galleon.

The San Salvador fired its cannon twice as it sailed out the mouth of Morro Bay. The ship is one of a dozen historic vessels owned by the Maritime Museum of San Diego. The San Salvador visited The Embarcadero to promote the Morro Bay Maritime Museum.
