School district calls town hall meeting Dec. 2

Public invited to discussion on Common Core State Standards

California Common Core State StandardsThe Paso Robles Joint Unified School district is hosting a town hall meeting with its board of trustees on Dec. 2, 2013, at Winifred Pifer Elementary multi-purpose room at 6 p.m.

The main topic for discussion will be the California Common Core State Standards (CCCSS) implementation, as well as the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) testing program that will be used to assess the new standards.

The public is encouraged to attend the town hall meeting to gather information and ask questions regarding this important change in education.

What are Common Core State Standards

Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the same educational standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, according to educators. If students change schools or move to a different state, they will be learning the same things. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the CCSS to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.
