School districts to pay $5 million in teacher sex abuse case

Jeremy Monn

Jeremy Ryan Monn, 33

The Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District in Groveland, Calif., and Paso Robles Joint Unified School District have settled a lawsuit on behalf of a then-16-year-old student who was sexually abused by her high school teacher, Jeremy Monn.

Attorney David M. Ring, of Taylor & Ring obtained a $5 million dollar settlement against the districts. Paso Robles is set to pay $1 million and the Groveland district $4 million.

While Monn, 33, was a teacher in Groveland from 2011 to 2013, administrators received several serious complaints about his improper interactions with female students, according to allegations. Monn left Big Oak at the end of the 2012-13 school year under suspicious circumstances, with several glowing recommendations from the superintendent/principal and others, according to Ring,

Monn was hired by Paso Robles for the next school year, 2013-14, and taught at Paso Robles High School. During that year, he sexually abused a 16-year old girl, the plaintiff, on several occasions.

“This is the classic case of one school district passing off a known dangerous employee to another school district,” says Ring. “It is a shameful practice and one that must come to an end.”

In June 2014, Monn was arrested and criminally charged. After a girl from Big Oak then came forward, Monn was criminally charged with abusing her as well. Monn eventually pled guilty to abusing both girls and was sentenced to over six years in prison. He is at the Golden Gate Modified Community Correctional Facility in Kern County

The civil lawsuit filed in 2015 focused on the many complaints Big Oak received about Monn. The plaintiff in the case was the victim from Paso Robles. Her lawyer, Ring, contended that Big Oak knew of Monn’s serious misconduct, failed to report it to the police, and then gave Monn glowing, but false, recommendations so he would get a job elsewhere.
