Shandon schools placed on lockdown during investigation

Suspect arrested near school

On Friday Oct. 11 at about 12:35 p.m., San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office received a report of several people believed to be taking items from a vacant house in the 800 block of Mesa Grande Drive in Shandon.

Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene. Detectives were called out after a vehicle leaving the scene was reportedly involved in a carjacking incident in Modesto approximately a year ago. The license plate from that stolen vehicle was found on the vehicle driven by Shannon Wright, 36, of Modesto.

Wright was detained and indicated two additional subjects might possibly be inside the house. A perimeter was set up around the house. As a precautionary measure, Shandon Elementary and Shandon High school placed the students on lockdown at about 2 p.m.

Deputies assisted the schools with safely getting the students back to their parents at the end of the normally scheduled school day. Wright was taken into custody. Charges are pending. The vehicle he was driving was seized as evidence. Deputies on scene were unable to confirm any additional subjects were inside the house and a search warrant was not authorized. Sheriff’s units have cleared the scene and left the location. The investigation is ongoing.
