Sheriff to honor deputies, employees at assembly 

‘Life Saving Award’ to be given to three deputiesSheriff

–The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a general assembly on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. at the Sheriff’s Honor Farm, located at 880 Oklahoma Avenue, San Luis Obispo. Commendations and dedicated service awards will be presented to deputies and employees.

Among the highlights of the ceremony will be the Sheriff’s Life Saving Award to the following deputies:

Deputy Matthew Shields helped rescue a woman last August whose personal watercraft had overturned on Lopez Lake and she was trapped underwater. Shields dove into the water and was able to free the woman and save her life.

Deputy Brian Mollenkopf rescued an elderly man last July from inside a burning home in Arroyo Grande. Mollenkopf entered the burning home and was able to drag the unconscious man outside to safety and save his life.

Correctional Deputy Alistair Paterson rescued an inmate who had tried to take his own life last month. Paterson came across an inmate who was attempting to hang himself. He immediately called for assistance, held the inmate steady while another correctional deputy untied the bed sheet from the bars thereby saving the inmates life.
