Smart and Final Extra opens on Creston Road

Smart and Final Extra at 1191 Creston Road is holding its grand opening today from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

–A new Smart and Final Extra on Creston Road is holding its grand opening Wednesday, March 9, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The newest store fills the space previously occupied by Haggen’s and Von’s at 1191 Creston Rd. Smart and Final opened its first Paso Robles store at 2121 Spring Street two years ago. A third store for North County is scheduled to open in Atascadero in two weeks at 8200 El Camino Real.

Smart and Final Extra is the company’s newest store concept designed for both household consumers and business customers. The stores carry an expanded selection of produce, fresh meat, frozen foods, dairy, deli and grocery basics like cereal, yogurt, bread and snacks. The store carries thousands of items in smaller, convenient sizes for the household shopper as well as items that small businesses, clubs and organizations need on a daily basis.

Store manager Jim Dupree said he is looking forward to providing a wider shopping experience for the Paso Robles area. “We offer local produce, a bakery and have a bulk foods section,” said Dupree. “Bulk foods allow our customers to buy as much or as little of what they need.” The bulk food sections provides a wide variety of items such as cereal, grains, and sweet and savory treats. “I’m just waiting for the peanut butter chocolate pretzels to arrive,” said Dupree. Dupree, who lives in Morro Bay, has worked for Smart and Final for 44 years. Before managing the new Paso Robles store, he managed stores in Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo.

Corporate Marketing Manager Kimberly Wade said that adding the two new stores to North County offers local consumers more choices for value, prices, and quality. Dupree said that approximately 60 employees have been hired and that hiring is ongoing. Dupree said to apply for a job “Bring your resume and apply at the store. We hire teenagers, too.”

Smart and Final Stores, Inc. Is headquartered in Los Angeles and operates approximately 250 grocery and food service stores under the “Smart & Final”, “Smart & Final Extra!” and “Cash&Carry Smart Foodservice” banners in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and Northern Mexico. “We started 145 years ago and are experiencing unprecedented growth,” said Wade.

The store stocks as much local produce as possible.

Smart and Final has a longstanding reputation for active involvement in the communities where they do business from sponsoring local youth sports teams to participating in community and charitable events. Dupree said community support is available through the Smart and Final Charitable Foundation. “Organizations can always call the store for help, too.”
