Songwriters at Play is hosting two shows the weekend of Nov. 2-3.

Amber Cross

amber crossAmber Cross will play at Vines on the Marycrest on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 1-4 p.m. Cross, of The Old Time Fiddle & Banjo Show, has a new CD out, entitled “You Can Come In”. Originally from Maine, Cross grew up surrounded by gospel music in a small town church where her father still preaches and her mother plays piano. Her original old-time style has been likened to that of an old Smithsonian recording. She writes from her own life struggles and experiences delivering her stories with unforgettable power and emotion. Her major influences are Hazel Dickens, Iris Dement, Rose Maddox, Tom Waits, Greg Brown and The Carter Family. Special guests include Kristen Black, Kate Graves, and L.A. band Wicked Saints.

Vines on the Marycrest is located at 5076 Mustard Creek Rd., off Lake Nacimiento Road, across the street from Chronic Cellars, Paso Robles, (805) 237-0378. No cover charge, all ages OK.

Dutch trio Snowapple Brings Harmonies to Sculpterra

snow appleFans of the Be Good Tanyas will find much to like in Snowapple, a female trio on tour from Holland. Snowapple was the opening act on The Be Good Tanyas Dutch tour last August. Fanny de Ruiter, Laurien Schreuder, and Una Bergin combine three-part harmonies and multi-instrumental backups. Laurien is an opera singer who also performed with a gypsy punk band. Fanny is also a classically-trained vocalist and composer. Una is a jazz singer with worldly influences. Special guests on Nov. 3 include Julian Temple, Sandii Castleberry, and Anna Tivel.

Songwriters At Play holds showcases every Sunday afternoon, 1– 4 p.m. at Sculpterra Winery, 5015 Linne Road, Paso Robles, (805) 226-8881. The showcase includes one featured act and others playing 4-song sets. They pass the tip jar during the featured set, otherwise no cover. All ages are welcome — great place for a family picnic.
