Steve Gregory moved to Paso Robles 34 years ago, bringing his family with him. His children, Valerie Stemper and Jeremiah Gregory, were both born and raised in Paso Robles. He is running for a seat on the Paso Robles City Council, for which there are two seats up for grabs between five candidates: Gregory, Pamela Avila, Hamon, Picanco and Jim Reed.

“Paso Robles is very near and dear to my heart. We have a wonderful city and I think we can make it better,” Gregory said.

Gregory has been on the Paso Robles Planning Commission and the Development Review Committee for the past five and a half years. He applied to be on the Commission because he liked how the city opened its doors to his business. His wife, Dawn, is a co-owner of Odyssey World Cafe in downtown Paso Robles.

His three platforms are:
• Transparency
• Return of services
• Economic development

While Gregory said he is pleased to see the police chief’s transparency and efforts to reach out to the community, he would like to see more communication with the public from the other city departments. He said he gets complaints from citizens about things the city is doing or not doing, but feels that the complaints are due to the need for more communication between the citizens and the city departments.

“We have Facebook, the Paso Robles Daily News and many other ways to communicate for little or no cost. We need to move into the new age of technology and take that information to the citizens,” Gregory said, adding that his favorite meeting to attend is the yearly budget meeting where every department head stands up and tells what is going on in that department. He said that is something that could happen on a regular basis through press releases, Facebook or online news.

For city services, Gregory said he would like to see the Centennial Park pool open at least in the summer for the community children to have somewhere affordable and close by to swim and cool off during our hot summer days. He said he also wants to see more aggressive road maintenance happening to get our roads back in good condition.

Economic development is why Gregory said he got involved with the planning commission. “Let’s keep our arms open to new development and take good care of our existing businesses,” he said.

“I am an ambassador for Paso Robles every day. I want to continue our openness to new businesses and visitors alike. I think we do pretty well, but we could do better. Small businesses are our bread and butter.”

Gregory said he wants to see the city focus on the airport, so it can work on getting the airport to look like a gateway to our community. Additionally, Gregory said he would like to push to get the infrastructure put in for the lots available at the airport. This would jump start getting companies to develop those lots.

Gregory said that his innovation and communication and listening skills will make him a representative and productive council member. Not only has he lived in Paso Robles for 34 years, he has also been an active community member over the years, donating his time to youth sports, schools activities, Paso Robles Main Street Association and being a Rotary Club member. He is a project design consultant, helping people design homes or remodels, as well as consulting with small businesses. He and his wife own vacation rentals in the area and he finds himself promoting Paso Robles every time he meets a new guest.

“I’m ready to step up and work at a higher level in our city,” Gregory said. “It’s a huge job to [be a council member] and I have the energy and willingness to do it. I want to dedicate my time for the next four years to the city. I love our town, I just want to make it better. We have an amazing place to live here let’s keep it that way.”
