Students thank veterans for service

Veterans DayStudents and staff at Lillian Larsen School in San Miguel hosted their 2nd Annual Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony on Friday with nineteen local veterans attending as special guests.

With help from Colonel Weeks of Camp Roberts, a color guard presented the flag and after the pledge of allegiance, Emma Gomez of Almond Acres Charter Academy sang the national anthem. This was followed by the singing of “You’re a Grand Old Flag” by Mrs. Johnson’s third grade class.

Among the special guests at the event were Joe Martinez (retired US Marine serving from 1952- 1972) and his brother Vic Martinez (retired US Air Force serving from 1956 – 1976) who were both former students at Lillian Larsen School. School custodian Robert Phillips was also given a loud round of applause for serving in the Army National Guard for 11 years.

Miss Morris’s and Mrs. Ramos’s kindergarten classrooms presented cards to the veterans and created posters showing what Veterans Day meant to them. At the conclusion of the event, Mrs. Cedillo’s middle school class joined the veterans on the field and shook hands, thank them for their service.
