Female victim home alone when suspect attempted burglary, neighbors apprehend suspect

–On Thursday, June 16 18-year-old James Benjamin Scott was arrested for attempted burglary in rural Arroyo Grande. A female victim reported a burglary in progress after encountering the suspect in her home.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office deputies received the call regarding the burglary in the 2500 block of Snowcone Place and responded to the scene. The victim was home alone when she heard someone enter her house; after encountering the male suspect he fled on foot down the street.

Neighbors, who were outside at the time, were alerted by the victim and called the sheriff’s office after making contact with the suspect. They say the suspect admitted he had planned to burglarize the home. While waiting for the deputies to arrive, the suspect fled the scene. Three male neighbors tackled the suspect and held him until deputies arrived.

A search discovered the man was carrying a small knife and a hammer. Scott was arrested for burglary and possession of burglary tools and booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail.
