Tractor trailer collides with multiple vehicles majorly injuring five

Two injured parties airlifted to Fresno hospital

–Five Taft residents were seriously injured as a result of a collision involving a tractor trailer Tuesday morning, according to California Highway Patrol.

Tuesday morning, at approximately 3:42 a.m., a Peterbilt tractor trailer combination driven by a 19-year-old male out of Greenfield was traveling eastbound on the Highway 46 East, approaching Flower Ln. near Shandon. For an unknown reason, the driver allowed his vehicle to cross into the westbound lane. In doing so, the Peterbilt sideswiped a Freightliner tractor trailer combination driven by a 38-year-old male out of Hesperia. The driver of the Freightliner pulled his vehicle over to the right shoulder and called “911” to report the collision.

The Peterbilt continued eastbound, again crossing into the westbound lane. The left front of the Peterbilt collided with the left front of a Nissan Quest minivan. The Nissan Quest came to rest on the north shoulder as one of its passengers was fully ejected and another was partially ejected. The Peterbilt overturned on the north shoulder and collided with two earth movers that were parked a couple hundred feet north of the roadway, according to CHP.

The driver of the Peterbilt sustained minor injuries. The driver of the Nissan Quest had to be extricated. Five of the six occupants of the Nissan Quest sustained major injuries. Two of the occupants were airlifted to Fresno. All occupants in the Nissan Quest were from Taft, Calif.

All of the other injured parties were transported via ground ambulance to Twin Cities Community Hospital and Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.
