Update: The San Luis Sheriff’s Office released the names of the two individuals who died in Saturday’s plane crash. The subjects were identified as Robert Berg, 82, of Paso Robles and John Warren, 66, of Paso Robles. Autopsies are scheduled next week. The investigation of this incident is ongoing.

Robert Berg was a local businessman and philanthropist who, with his wife Donna, helped start the Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation. John Warren was the owner of the popular tourism company Let’s Go Ballooning. He was a pilot since 1973 and a former Marine. He started offering balloon rides in Paso Robles in 2004.

Original story: Two men died Saturday morning when a plane crashed at a private airstrip in the 5100 block of Vineyard Drive in rural Paso Robles near Highway 46 west.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a plane crash at about 10 a.m. When they arrived they discovered a single engine Piper Cub airplane had crashed in an open field.

There were two male occupants on board the plane, the pilot and a passenger. Both are confirmed fatalities. Identification of the victims are pending notification of next of kin.

Witnesses reported seeing the plane take off and then a short time later start to bank to the right. It continued this circular pattern until it spiraled to the ground.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are en route to the scene.

The location of the crash was at Oak Country Ranch Airport, which is registered with the FAA as a privately-owned airport with an asphalt runway owned by Robert Berg, according to the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

No further information is available at this time.
