Vehicle rolls off Highway 101 and over train tracks

highway 101 accident

An accident scene on northbound Highway 101 Monday afternoon.

A vehicle today rolled down an embankment and off Highway 101, just south of the Spring Street offramp to Paso Robles. The accident happened at about 2:07 p.m. near the Trailer Barn, according to the California Highway Patrol. Though the highway was not blocked, traffic backed up for miles as vehicles slowed down near the scene.

Driving a black 2001 Ford F-150, Debbie S. Hallmark, 48, of Atascadero, was traveling northbound on Highway 101, CHP reports. While traveling in the first lane traffic, for unknown reasons, she allowed the truck to drift to the left, into the center median, then abruptly to the right, across the No. 1 lane, No. 2 lane, and right shoulder where it traveled down a steep dirt embankment and across the railroad tracks where the vehicle overturned and came to rest on its side, the report says.

Hallmark was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Twin Cities Hospital for treatment of major injuries, including a broken left rib and broken hand. A 13-year-old female passenger was not injured, the report says.

The cause of the collision is still currently under investigation. Alcohol and or drugs are not suspected to have contributed to this collision, CHP reports.

Authorities were initially concerned about the vehicle’s proximity to the railroad tracks, but were advised another train was not due for two hours.
